Learning English, Literature by Moving the Body (VIDEO)

Baldwin Park educator launches "Move to Read" DVD, a fun, innovative way to beginning literacy skills.

For Miriam Everette, a long time educator in the Baldwin Park area, using physical activities to support literacy came about as a natural extension of decades of observation of both kids and adults. The educator developed a program called “Move to Read" that evolved as a result of her observation of adults struggling with learning both kinesthetic movement and a literacy skill in the classes she used to give at Morgan Park.  “I was hearing about ‘Reading by 9’, ‘Read Across America’, etc. and started to wonder....what happened, why are kids having such a tough time learning to read now,” said Everette, “what's changed? After LUSD's school board meeting last Tuesday, claims of threatened recalls and political motives for certain school board actions came to light.

Leer en Español.  The 3-2 vote approving a contract with Lynwood Unified School District's former legal consul, Leal & Trejo, at last Tuesday's school board meeting was to ensure payment of the law firm's work on a particular case, said district Superintendent Ed Velasquez.   "I told this to the board last time, I have to pay [Leal & Trejo] and in order to pay them we have to have a contract," said Velasquez.  Leal & Trejo's previous contract had been terminated in December of last year but they continued working on a special education case since February of this year, he mentioned.  The month-to-month contract approval spurred much outrage from board member Rachel Chavez who said the board clearly asked for all cases to be handed over to …
