Luis Cuellar Jr., son of Lynwood councilmember Aide Castro, was awarded the scholarship at Downey High School's senior awards presentation, Thursday night.
After almost a year’s worth of work applying for the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps’ competitive $180,000 dollar scholarship, Lynwood resident Luis Cuellar Jr., finally got to see the fruits of his labor at his high school senior awards ceremony in Downey, Thursday night, when his check was presented to him by Marine officers. Aside from looking at SAT scores and extracurricular activities, eligibility was also based on admission to approved NROTC colleges, a background screening, and the passing of physical fitness tests. “It feels good, it was a big burden off my shoulders,” said Cuellar Jr., after receiving his award. The 5th annual Open House showcasing work done by senior citizens, took place on Thursday at the Lynwood Senior Citizen Center. The open house featured work from over 20 groups with special performances from dance and fitness classes. Lynwood resident, Rebecca Allen, showed off her artwork at the open house, with art skills she had been finetuning since she started. "When I came in, I knew how to draw from a picture, but I never painted or blended colors," said Allen. The art class is taught by instructor Esteban Melendez, who emphasizes understandment of art and fun. "I try to encourage enjoyment and then from there the art flows a lot easier," he said. Century Station sheriff's officials switched roles, Wednesday afternoon, taking up a notebook and pen, ready to take down orders from Denny's customers as part of a fundraising effort for a children's program. The '999 For Kids' program was developed through the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the Department of Children and Family Services to help physically and mentally challenged children throughout Los Angeles County who are victims of the most severe cases of child abuse, neglect and family violence, according to the organization's website. Traffic is moving very slow on the southbound 710 freeway with cars going about 10-20 miles per hour due to two car accidents within two hours. A car accident, just south of the Firestone Boulevard exit, between a gray Toyota Camry and green Jeep Cherokee occurred around 9:11 a.m. No injuries were reported. Another accident at the Los Angeles River area on the freeway at around 8:15 a.m. began the delay on the freeway. The accident involved a white van and red truck. Traffic is backed up past the 5 freeway.
